2005 Meritorious Hall of Fame Michael A. Carmella
Michael A. Carmella is an East Stroudsburg High School graduate of the class of 1975, where he earned five varsity letters and was awarded the Varsity “E” Scholarship. A tireless community servant, Mike is the Director of the East Stroudsburg Youth Association (ESYA) Football and Tee Ball programs. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club, the East Stroudsburg Community Alliance (ECA), ESYA, and the Purple & White Athletic Club (for which he is the president). In addition, Mike was the Co-Chairman of the East Stroudsburg Little League field renovation. He also organized the Doctors v. Coaches Charity Basketball Game, the ESU and Cavalier Football Big Brother Breakfasts, the Cavalier Baseball Clinic, the ECA American Freedom Festival, and the efforts for the construction of the new concession stand at ESU's Eiler-Martin Stadium. He served as the chairperson of the Kiwanis Radio Day and was the creator of the “Basketbows for Arthur” fundraiser. Mike is a multi-sport ESYA coach, as well as a Little League coach and All-Star umpire. Mike also volunteers as a Cavalier Football cameraman and is an announcer and emcee for school and community events. He received the first-ever “Cavalier of the Year” Award, as well as the Kiwanis President's Award, the ES-South Community Service Award, and two Addie advertising awards.
Robert C. Hillman
Robert C. Hillman is a graduate of the ESHS class of 1961. He served in the US Army from 1965-68, including two years of duty in Vietnam . Bob received a Technical Degree from the Allentown Electronics Training Center and an Associate's Degree in Digital Electronics Technology from Rider Tech. He was a civil servant for 36 years, retiring from the Tobyhanna Army Depot, where he taught computerized data communications to military sites worldwide. A highly respected member of the community, Bob is the founder and Chairperson of the Unity Coalition of the Poconos, a Vice President and life member of the Monroe County chapter of the NAACP, and assists public school officials with civil rights issues. He is also the Vice Chairperson of the Little Bethel Historical Association and a Board member for Women's Resources of Monroe County, the Pocono Healthy Communities Alliance, the Pennsylvania Alliance for Democracy; and Monroe County Children and Youth (for which he is the Chairperson of the Public Relations Committee). Bob has received numerous awards, including the NAACP's Roy Wilkins Award, the ESU Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, the PSEA Civil Rights Award; the Governor's All-Star Volunteer Award, and the Monroe County Bar Association Liberty Award, A top public speaker, Bob has appeared on many TV and radio programs. Raymond Morris
Raymond Morris is a 1972 East Stroudsburg High School graduate, where earned seven varsity letters and is a member of the Cavalier Football Wall of Fame. Ray was also a Rifle Team Co-Captain and an Exchange Club Youth of the Month. He received a BS in Secondary Education from East Stroudsburg University (ESU) in 1977 and an MA in History from ESU in 1985. Ray was awarded a full academic scholarship to pursue graduate studies at Lehigh University . He was also a University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute Policy Forum Fellow for 1999-2000. Ray was also an All-American on the Archery Team at ESU in 1974 and 1976, and was selected for the All-East Archery Team from 1974 to 1977 and the US Olympic Final Trials in 1976. He has been the Director of the Federal Executive Board of Minnesota since 1997 and was employed with the National Park Service from 1980-97, serving as Chief Ranger from 1991-97. A dedicated community servant, Ray is on the Board of Directors for the Association of Minnesota Emergency Management and is the City Parks and Recreation Commissioner for Mendota Heights , Minnesota . He has been honored with the NPS National Freeman Tilden Award, the Georgia Department of Education Award for Educational Partnership, the US Department of the Interior Team Award, the Hamline University Community Partner Award, the Minnesota Hassle Free Government Award, and the Vice President Al Gore Hammer Award, which he won three times. Ray has also served as a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of his local Red Cross since 1991. Nancy (Michael) Shukaitis
A graduate of East Stroudsburg High School , class of 1942, Nancy Shukaitis became the first female Monroe County Commissioner. Serving for 16 years as a county commissioner, Nancy also became the first female chairperson of county commissioners in the state of Pennsylvania . She also became the first female in Monroe County history to chair a political party when she was named chairperson of the Monroe County Republican Party. Nancy formed the Delaware Valley Conservation Association in 1965 to fight the Tocks Island Dam Project, filing suit in US Supreme Court. She was also the co-founder of the Save-the-Delaware-Coalition in 1970. Among her many awards, Nancy received the Monroe County Sportsman Club Award, the Pennsylvania Association of County Commissioners Certificate of Appreciation, the 1989 East Stroudsburg University Sigma Xi Citizens Award, the Beta Sigma Phi Woman of Year Award, the 1990 Park Project Award, and the 2005 Delaware Riverkeeper Lifetime Achievement Award. The author of the book, Lasting Legacies of the Lower Minisink , Nancy is an expert and speaker on Native American life in Monroe County .
