Three of the 50+ students involved in monthly IF Institute meetings are preparing their Rube Goldberg machine. Its goal is to knock a Lego man into a cup. These elementary students worked in small groups using recyclable materials to complete the task in at least 3 steps and demonstrating knowledge of at least two simple machines. The IF Institute provides differentiated instruction for the District's elementary gifted students.
UN Aspire South students welcomed Sheryl WuDunn, Pulitzer Prize Winning journalist and author of the internationally best selling non-fiction book Half the Sky. UN Aspire South are to be featured in the PBS documentary adaptation of Half the Sky also featuring George Clooney, America Ferrara, and Olivia Wilde. UN Aspire South have been asked to present a panel at the United Nations The Commission on the Status of Women in New York City. This will also be included in the PBS documentary.
ESE has been awarded a banner from the PA Positive Behavior Support Network for their School Wide Positive Behavior Support Program. The award is in recognition of fidelity of implementation at the universal level. Pictured are the staff members that are on the ESE School-Wide Positive Behavior Committee.
Bushkill Elementary's African Drumming Club preparing for their December 2011 Winter Concert.
The East Stroudsburg Education Association donated $1,633.50 to the Salvation Army to assist needy families during this holiday season. Money was raised by district faculty and staff through "Casual for a Cause" days held at all of the district's schools. Presenting the donation to Major Deborah Gingrich are Arlene Kirkwood and Shawn Wescott.
Mrs. Kirkwood and her fifth grade class (from Smithfield Elementary School), together with Shawnee Country Club and the YMCA, worked together to feed the homeless. The students sang Christmas songs, intermingled with the guests,and helped to bus tables.
Tuba and euphonium student musicians from East Stroudsburg performed as part of the annual Tuba Christmas concert at Rockefeller Center in NYC. Students from HS North, HS South, and Lehman represented the district. There were over 500 tuba and euphonium players performing, ages 9 to 74, and from as far away as Texas!
At December's 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades assemblies, Ann Matthews, an instructional aid at ESE leads students in a song about Pennsylvania.
Middle Smithfield Elementary had a pajama day where students paid $1 to wear pajamas for Toys for Tots. They collected $308 and 56 toys. Then some students from Character Club and Mrs. Trauschke's homeroom went shopping at Walmart and bought more toys for a total of 106 toys for Toys for Tots.
