Mission Statement:

Welcome to South & the English department! The English department is located on the second floor of the Maple building. Our goal is to educate the student in all aspects of English and to do so in an environment that shows respect and concern for each individual. Every student is required to take a “core” English class offered from basic skills to Advanced Placement. In addition to the core English that every student must take each year, the English department offers a variety of electives that appeal to all facets of different students’ personalities. If students are interested in "acting,” we offer Studio Broadcasting, Drama, and Public Speaking. If they are interested in pursuing different types of writing, we offer Studio Broadcasting, Yearbook, Journalism, and Creative Writing. These electives also allow students to explore their creative side along with their technological sides with the production of South Side Live, the yearbook, our school newspaper, and our literary magazine. Lastly, we offer Film Studies, Gender Studies, and SAT Verbal Prep. There is no doubt that students will find an interesting area to explore and will meet English teachers who are inviting and exciting!!  Stop by anytime to check out what’s happening in English!
