Greetings and Opening Remarks – Paul Schmid
Old Business:
- Classroom Education-Paul spoke about the classroom time he spent with JTL classes in April. A food test was conducted and a Q and A session followed. Paul also spoke to college kiddos at ESU in April.
- Admin review-update- So far so good. Kristin Santangelo from PDE was in to observe two sites. The Health and Wellness documents are in order. Policy 243 needed a few additions to the policy. These will be added in the May and June school board meeting for final approvals.
- Opening food service meeting: Michelle DeRobertis will present on Vegetarian on August 21st to the food service staff. She had presented to the local chapter meeting in April and was well received by both ESASD and Pleasant Valley school staff.
- Chef in the school – Michelle will be presenting at Resica on May 28th to the 5th-grade class. This is the first time FSD has done a chef class in two years. She will be speaking on healthy snacks and showing how to make items. The children will also make the same item for their personal consumption.
- School Activities –
- Hill has started a weight loss program “Biggest Loser” for their staff. So far almost 173 # has been lost for the 17 participants. One staff member has already lost 20 #.
- Hill has a walking club after school hours for their staff. An average of 5 participates in the walk.
- Smithfield participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Mr. Moskovitz and Mr. Davidge report that the students raised $1,107 for the American Heart Association.
- JTL has an informational Vaping program set up for 8th grade by our SAP program.
- JTL is currently looking to expand our fitness center to promote cardio and life-long fitness. A meeting will occur in the next two weeks.
- JTL students participate in health class for all three years.
- JTL also has coming up the student will be participating in a Pride Day where they do outdoor sporting activities.
- Healthy Tips – After a four-year run, the healthy tips will end in June. There has been a minimal activity or interest in the column. Previous Articles will stay on the website for viewing for the 19-20 school year.
- Hunger Coalition (UW) – The Hunger Coalition is going through a lot of changes. Some of the issues were discussed. Paul did not know if the group would continue to meet. There has been a minimal amount of interest especially from the food pantries in Monroe County and Pike County. More updates will be given at the September meeting.
- Agenda format – The members felt the format should stay the same.
- Member retiring: Deb Corson – Kudos were given to Deb for her many years of service to both the school district and to the Health and Wellness committee. Good luck and health were wished to Debbie as she retires in June.
New Business:
- Chair and vice chair – Jennifer Huffman was again reelected as Vice Chair. Paul will remain as Chair.
- Meeting dates for next school year: All meetings will begin at 3:45

- Open forum
- Whole grains exemptions no longer need approval from PDE. ESASD still must offer 50% of their grains as whole grains for the week.
- Denise and Marilyn will be looking at Philly Pretzels for next school year; to be used as a treat.
- Summer Programs are ready to go on June 17th at the Parks ad June 19th in several schools. All sites will be open on July 1.
- Michelle will be sharing a Brownie Muffin which uses pumpkin and a chocolate cake mix. It will be tested in the school in the fall.
- Denise and Paul will be attending a conference on vegetarian foods and recipe in May.
- Denise, Jennifer, and Marilyn will be attending in early June exhibits highlighting all vegetarian items.
- Deb questioned why some popular items such as bananas and Honeynut Cheerios are sometimes missing at Hill. Denise noted that bananas are hit and miss on quality and sometimes must be sent back to the distributor.
- Marilyn discussed some new items made from leftovers such as grilled cheese squares, pretzel nibs with garlic and light oil. The kiddos enjoyed them as an a la carte item.
